At just 46 years old, Phil passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind his family with two teenagers. Phil was a Social Worker, working with teenagers, who seldom missed the opportunity to visit his local Indian restaurant on a Saturday evening.
To celebrate his life, they held a memorial meal at his favourite Indian restaurant, serving Madras curry and poppadoms—a true reflection of Phil’s love for food and community.
The Indian Restaurant
Raj, the restaurant owner, generously opened his doors for the afternoon. He suggested meaningful Hindu traditions that resonated with Phil’s family and friends, making the occasion even more special.

A Unique Farewell
The staff greeted guests warmly, offering trays of poppadoms and refreshing green tea as they arrived. At the centre of the restaurant, Phil’s coffin served as a focal point, adorned with heartfelt gifts from family and friends. The ambience was warm and nostalgic, perfectly suited for the occasion.
The ceremony featured touching tributes from those who knew Phil best. His favourite song, “Stop Crying Your Heart Out” by Oasis, played while photos of Phil were displayed on a screen, allowing everyone to reminisce about the cherished moments they shared with him. The event beautifully captured Phil’s warmth, generosity, and his ability to make everyone feel welcome.
After the tributes, guests indulged in a feast of Phil’s favourite dishes, including Madras curry and Tandoori chicken with naan bread. The spicy Madras curry brought back fond memories of shared meals at the restaurant, highlighting Phil’s passion for Indian cuisine.

A Unique Multi-sensory Farewell
As guests savoured their dishes, a moment of reflection unfolded, culminating in a heartfelt toast to Phil. This simple gesture brimmed with deep emotion. It honoured a friend, a father, and a companion, someone who had deeply touched their lives. The atmosphere blended celebration and remembrance, allowing everyone present to connect with their grief.
Once the meal concluded, attendees swapped stories and enjoyed their drinks while Phil’s coffin was taken for an unattended cremation. In those moments of laughter and storytelling, Phil’s spirit felt vibrant and alive.
The Difference Is…
A growing trend of people opting for personal and unique funerals is a positive shift. Funerals honour lives and help us navigate through loss. A thoughtful farewell facilitates the grieving process and allows us to adjust to life without our loved ones. It acknowledges the loss while marking the beginning of our journey to a “new normal.”
By hosting this unconventional farewell, Phil’s family celebrated his life significantly. The funeral became more than just a goodbye; it became a lively celebration of Phil’s identity.
His wife Mel, said,
“This was one of the nicest most meaningful funerals I’ve ever been to, organised in it’s entirety by Steve. The life in photos was beautiful, just outstanding, and it made a very sad occasion such an uplifting experience for us all, especially the boys.”
When it comes to honouring the life of a loved one, selecting the right officiant can profoundly impact the experience. The difference is, I offer a deeply personalised and holistic approach. I focus on the unique stories that define individuals and the specific needs of their families. Unlike many officiants who merely lead the ceremony, my services encompass a much broader range of support and experience.
My extensive background in grief and bereavement equips me to embrace complex emotions. I am dedicated to crafting a meaningful experience that resonates deeply with those left behind, helping them celebrate a life well-lived while gently guiding them through their grief. By entrusting me with this sacred duty, you ensure that the farewell becomes not just a ceremony, but a heartfelt tribute—a true reflection of your loved one’s legacy
A Smashing Chap
Phil was truly a remarkable individual—a “smashing chap,” as many described him. His spirit touched everyone present. The memorial, set among family and friends enjoying his favourite dishes in his favourite place, showcased an excellent way to celebrate his memory. Cheers, Phil!

Here are five inspiring ways to create a unique farewell:
- Incorporate Visual Elements: Curate a beautiful display of photos and videos that capture the essence of your person’s journey, passions, and relationships. Create a touching photo slideshow, set up a memory table with personal items, or craft an evocative video montage that brings their story to life.
- Play Meaningful Music: Select songs that were special to them. Include their favourite artists and beloved genres, or even feature live performances by family and friends that resonate with shared experiences.
- Share Personal Stories: Encourage family and friends to gather and share cherished anecdotes, reflections, and memories of them. You can do this through a moving eulogy, a warm sharing circle, or by collecting written messages. This allows everyone to feel connected in their grief and celebration.
- Choose a Meaningful Location: Opt for a venue that is meaningful to them or their family. Whether it’s a place of worship, a tranquil park, a community centre, or their home, the right setting can add a deeply personal touch to the service.
- Offer Personalised Keepsakes: Give attendees thoughtful mementoes that are lasting reminders of them. Consider personalised memorial cards, treasured recipes, seed packets symbolising growth and renewal, or small items representing a hobby or interest.
By thoughtfully combining these elements, you ensure that the funeral ceremony becomes a poignant and memorable celebration of a life well lived.
