In this blog, I’m unlocking the secrets of the past and the importance of celebrating the life and achievements of a loved one—in stark contrast to the current trend of unattended cremations.

I worked as a tour guide in London during the mid-90s, so I know London better than my home town. I was captivated by how tourists were fascinated by the history, which meant that my work was riveting for much of the time. It could also be immensely frustrating.
For example, on one occasion, I guided a coach full of Americans around London and, afterwards, Windsor Castle. Winsdor is a full-day march from the City (30 miles). It was always customary to tell the history of Windsor Castle en route via the M4 so that when we arrived, the tourists would have a good idea of what to look for.
Take note that the original castle was built in the 11th century, after the Norman Invasion, by William the Conqueror. I had spent a good 30 minutes explaining that since the time of Henry I (who reigned 1100–1135), it has been used by the reigning monarch and is the longest-occupied palace in Europe. I was in full swing with my schpiel when we suddenly hit traffic…
I eventually ran out of things to say, and at the time, the media was reporting that the then Prince Charles had complained about the aircraft’s flight path to and from Heathrow. Aircraft fly low over windsor castle as they come in to land. So I decided to contemporise by delivery and share this with the tourists.
Suddenly, an American lady sitting behind me piped up, “Excuse me, guide, but how come they built a castle so close to an airport?”
The Secrets of The Past
Of course, there are distinct differences in how Americans and Britons perceive and relate to history. Americans often focus more on the recent past, while Britons tend to have a deeper connection to their long and complex history. This difference is partly due to each nation’s unique historical context and cultural values, but, as infuriated as I was at the time, this American lady made me think! The deeper our history, the more discoveries to be found!
History is a chronological record of significant events and trends, providing valuable lessons. By exploring our history, we can better understand our mistakes and gain deeper insights. Our personal history shapes our present and future. We are products of our past; we are what we have become. Learning the secrets of our past helps us clarify our identity, trace our origins, and understand the journey that has brought us to today.
Honouring the lives of those we have lost involves reflecting on their past, cherishing memories, and celebrating their legacy. In this sense, history can take various forms, from remembering specific events and milestones to recognising their broader impact on our lives and the world around us. Memorial is important then, because it provides a space to embrace their story and for us to learn from it.
Does History Teach Us That History Teaches Us Nothing?
Perhaps the American woman wasn’t paying attention. Nevertheless, her ignorance underscored the significance of history and the importance of understanding it. This understanding helps us navigate the future, if for no other reason. The phrase “history teaches us that history teaches us nothing” is a paradox that suggests we tend to repeat past mistakes. It highlights our tendency to forget or fail to apply lessons from history, often leading to the same problems recurring. However, by paying attention to our history and learning from it, we are better equipped to face the unknown. History reveals everything about who we are—our past holds the keys to our identity!
Denying ourselves the opportunity to reflect on and honour lives and their histories can dehumanise us. We must remember that funerals prevent us from overlooking the essential value of our shared human experiences. They serve as a springboard from which we can navigate the future.
